On November 21st, 2011, the Adamed Group hosted representatives of the Trade Policy Committee STIS. The aim of the visit from the EU member state representatives at the company headquarters in Pienkow was to familiarize themselves with the pharmaceutical industry in Poland, discover factors for its success and to learn about Adamed’s innovative projects.
Warsaw, November 2011.
The Trade Policy Committee STIS is an institution bringing together officials from EU member states representing various industries. The Ministry of Economy was the local coordinator of the meeting. The Adamed Group, a Polish pharmaceutical company operating on the market for 25 years and can serve as an example of a company that both carries out innovative projects and has implemented an active export policy to many EU countries. Mr. Grzegorz Sinacki, Chief Specialist, Department for Trade Policy at the Ministry of Economy: The presence of representatives of the Trade Policy Committee in Poland is related to the Polish EU Presidency. Experts, administration officials representing the interests of various industries, regularly visit member countries in order to discuss subjects which are important for a particular sector. This time, these representatives were discussing the challenges faced by the European, including Polish, pharmaceutical industry. Due to the nature of the meeting, a number of key officials connected with the pharmaceutical industry at a European level visited Warsaw: Mr. Richard Bergstrom from the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations and Mr. Greg Perry from the European Generic Medicines Association. Also present were representatives of the European Commission as well as the Polish Pharmaceutical Institute, Polish Association of Pharmaceutical Industry Employers.
Time for Polish innovations
Mr. Maciej Adamkiewicz, President of the Adamed Group: We are proud that Adamed was selected from amongst all of the pharmaceutical companies in Poland and as the only one had the opportunity to host representatives of the member states at such high level as well as to present its activities in the area of innovative projects. It is surely a great honor for our company. During the meeting, Mr. Maciej Adamkiewicz gave a presentation about the Adamed Group and its innovative projects. The guests also had an opportunity to visit the laboratories in Pienkow.
What challenges were identified by the participants of the meeting?
Maciej Adamkiewicz: In my opinion, the most important challenge is to develop a joint strategy for the pharmaceutical industry – the government as well as the industry should identify one strategy and define the direction in which the industry should grow. Systemic solutions should be sought out, which will in the long-term create stable and supportive conditions for development of the pharmaceutical industry. The time to develop a product is between 10 and 15 years. Its success is also dependent on market stability. If it does not exist, then projects for new drugs are simply at a risk. Such are the characteristics of the pharmaceutical sector. Therefore, I believe that the government should identify, in agreement with the industry, the direction for further development. Pharmaceutical companies want to jointly create the business environment in which they operate – added Adamkiewicz.
TPC STIS (Committee for Textiles, Steel and other industry sectors) operates within the Council of the European Union and was formed by merging two separate Working Groups of the EU Council which dealt with textiles and steel. Additionally, besides addressing issues of these industries (i.e. trade policy, trade barriers with third countries, statistics, economic situation of these sectors, cooperation as part of the OECD committee, working groups of these industries with other nations, etc.), the newly formed TPC STIS was tasked with issues relating to other industries. The result of this is the development of materials presenting the current state of a selected industry as part of every Presidency (so called industry scorecard). Up to now, the TPC STIS has developed scorecards for the ceramics, car, metal, chemical and electronic industries. As part of the Polish Presidency, the TPC STIS is developing a scorecard for the pharmaceutical industry.
